Joan is a good friend who shared an amazing story with me about giving…
In August of 2007, when I was working all day – day after day – on my “non working virtual art room web site”, I received an enthusiastic phone call from a lady who said she had visited my web site, loved my products, and wanted to order all of them. She and her district art coordinator wanted to hire me! I was speechless and stunned, and finally interrupted her long enough to say, “how did you find me?” She said she had read the web site over and over, and finally found my phone number!
I had made a decision that the exposure was more important than the paycheck for this speaking engagement. They were in a small country town, and I thought they may not be able to afford a high-dollar speaker. I had made up my mind and told the coordinator I would adjust my fee to be affordable and match their budget! My thoughts were that I would go as low as $300.
An e-mail followed from the supervisor’s secretary that thanked me for my response, and informed me that they could only pay $3,000 for the speaking engagement with the art teachers!
I smiled again knowing that my giving was being rewarded, and my efforts reinforced to get my virtual classroom and membership site up and running so that it can serve other educators and our most valuable resource – our children. My giving was rewarded 10 X over the amount that I was going to ask for!
Thank you, Joan, this is a fantastic story of giving without expectation. Of being true and on purpose!
