Time And Money

Two of the biggest worries common to all people (or at least those of a western influence) are…

Time…

And money.

Many folks complain that they never have enough of either. So let’s play a game.

Imagine for just a moment that you had all the money that you ever needed. Said another way, that you no longer had any money or financial things to worry about and that all of your needs and wants would be met from here on out. And now, here’s the game, it’s in the form of a question…

If you had all the money that you would ever need, and therefore you didn’t have to “work”, what would you “do”?

Now ask the same question about time. And imagine you had all the time in the world, meaning your health was excellent, and you didn’t have any fear of old age or even death. How would do what you do? Would you feel the pressure of having to get it done this week or this month? Or would you take your time, trust in the process, and even stop to smell the roses along the way? In other words, would you enjoy the journey, and the unfolding?

So now… Here’s the real question…

Why aren’t you doing what you want to do, and allowing it to unfold at that graceful pace right now?

If you know what it is, then what are you waiting for? Get started now, even if it’s baby steps.

If it’s not coming to you, though, when will you give yourself the permission and the time to dream? To re-learn? To re-discover?

Thank you for playing,

Todd

PS – this is from one of Mike Dooley’s Notes From The Universe: “Worry and time have an inverse relationship. The more you have of one, the less you have of the other. Yet curiously, Todd, both are suspended when you live in the now.”

A Double Shot

So there I was, walking into the veterinarian to restock on heartworm pills for our German Shepherd, Licorice. I had my dollar in hand… Since there were quite a few folks in the lobby, I was a little more nervous than usual, and carefully looking around to make sure nobody would see the Secret Dollar Man in action! My first spot was just to place it on the counter next to a bowl. But the more I thought about it, the more it dawned on me there was definitely a better place. The bowl was actually filled with candy, for anyone to partake in while they’re waiting in the lobby for their furry family friend. So I looked around again, and when the moment felt right, I started swizzling papers around on the counter top, trying to hide the fact that I was trying to hide my dollar in this candy dish… Well, I pulled it off! And now the next kid – or, big kid for that matter – that goes in to stock up on some candy… OK, you know the rest! Give Away A Dollar A Day is truly a ton of fun!

That same afternoon, I made another trip to the Toyota dealership for our Camry Hybrid’s state inspection. I found myself in yet another lobby… This one had a couple rows of chairs and a flat screen TV with one of those entertaining day time court room shows playing. So I sat down in the second row, and in the seat next to me there were a stack of newspapers. I tucked another bill underneath the stack of papers. But, you know what, it was getting a little late in the afternoon, and I had this hunch that the stack of papers may just get thrown out soon, and that they might throw the dollar out with it. So I moved the bill to a more obvious and open spot between two seats in the row of seats in front of me. There was one guy walking around, talking on the cell phone, who spotted it but didn’t make a run at it. Then two more guys looked at it, and one of them even sat down right next to it without taking it! Finally, an older woman came walking right in front of me, spotted it in the row in front, and I loved watching her… She did not look around at all. Instead, she very confidently walked right over to it, opened up her purse, put the dollar in, and then walked over to the soda machine. Didn’t flinch at all. She knew that the bill was HERS!

Too fun!!!

Chipping Away On The Piano

I’m 52 years old. By some standards, that’s approaching old fart status… :)

I’ve been playing the guitar for 40 years, been singing for about 15 of ‘em. I absolutely love music, playing it, writing it, composing it, producing it. Music is in my blood. And I’ve recently made a real stretch with music…

I’ve started taking piano lessons. I can play the guitar with my eyes closed. But on the piano, I’m as newbie as newbie gets. I’ve only had TWO lessons thus far!

And you want to know what’s weird? I can feel that tendency within to want to quit.

Years ago, I taught guitar lessons. And it was almost unanimous that the students all wanted to quit somewhere close to the beginning. They just couldn’t get their fretting fingers to sit right on the strings… they couldn’t get that “sound” they were looking for, or that they had dreamed of before they picked up the instrument. They could imagine it, and hear it in their mind, but they couldn’t make it happen upon sitting down with the guitar and giving it a go.

So the weird part is… In my mind, I can hear myself playing beautiful pieces, and creating new works that are the best ever! But my fingers? Right now… well… they no workee… (OK, Ok, they workee, sort of, just not as well as I’d like them to, so am I being impatient? Probably…)

And then I had that big ah ha moment! When I look at this experience, this unfolding, on the bright side, I realize that each day, when I practice, it feels as though I am chipping away at something, one very tiny piece at a time. It may not look like much or seem like much from one day to the next, but… over time…

It’s like when a seasoned sculptor starts out with a big, ugly, formless block – he/she already “sees” the finished product, but must chip away, one very tiny piece at a time, to reveal to others what they already know.

So I commit to mentoring myself now and saying, “patience my young Padawan, time to get ready for lesson number 3!”

:)

Todd

PS – Is this related in any way to giving? You betcha! 100%! You must give time to anything worth doing, especially your dream!!!

Feminine Living.com

For a semi old timer like me, the whole experience of the internet sometimes feels like it’s moving at a pace that is faster than I can keep up with. Too many friend invites, Twitter tweets, blogs to read, how can I manage all of this? But the bigger question is this – am I supposed to? In other words, am I… and, are we… wired for this?

OK, Ok, there are definitely times when I want to be “connected”. But there are other times in my day and in my week that I long for a simpler pace, like actually calling someone on the phone, or making a gift to take with me when visiting a friend (instead of hurrying to the store to buy a pre-made gift wrapped in a pre-made package).

So, I really want to thank my wife, Victoria, because she values this simpler life, and reminds me of the importance of it. She helps women to bring it back into their lives and into their homes where they can truly embrace it. I believe we’d all be much happier and healthier if we just slowed down a wee bit and smelled those ol’ proverbial roses.

For more than a dozen years, Victoria has researched and taught about feminine tradition, celebration, and ceremony. Today, she has one of the most beautiful, and helpful, websites on the internet. Do yourself a favor… Downshift out of overdrive for a few moments today, and visit FeminineLiving.com. Look around, and browse through some of Victoria’s course and classes, and – this is my personal favorite! – her gift store where all of her products are hand crafted and hand packaged by Victoria herself!!

FeminineLiving.com is not really a stroll through memory lane… it’s a reminder of the importance of simplifying your life and your lifestyle in the here and now! Give the gift of simplicity and timeless tradition to yourself, and to your loved ones!

Blessings,

Todd

Give To Live, by Dr. Rick Barrett

I had lunch with Dr. Rick Barrett earlier this week. We first met almost 15 years ago at a music venue where I was performing, and didn’t talk again until a few weeks ago when Rick was a guest, along with Dr. Joe Vitale, on the Give Away A Dollar A Day Show. But this week was the first time I had the chance to sit down and really get to know Rick, on a more personal level.

I’ll tell you, Rick is an incredible man. He is one of those rare folks who truly walks his talk. Rick is a natural giver, giving unconditionally from his heart. And this really shines through in his missionary work that he does in Honduras and Mexico.

Rick recently announced a gem of a book that he co-authored with Dr. Vitale, called Give To Live. I’ve read it, was very inspired by it, and I highly recommend it to you. You can download the e-book version for free. Or you can get the printed version to take with you and share with friends!

Give To Live is about being in service, and it talks a lot about the missionary work Rick has done and continues to do. He shared a very moving story with me yesterday that is on his blog. You should read it, it’ll tug at your heart!

Like I said, when it comes to unconditional giving, and selfless service, Dr. Rick Barrett walks his talk.

Thank you, Rick, for the gifts you bring to the world every day!

Blessings,

Todd

The Clipboard

We had just finished eating at our favorite Greek restaurant in the Montrose area of Houston, and I needed to hit the restroom on the way out. I hadn’t given away my dollar yet for the day, so I thought I would leave it somewhere in the restroom. Just as I was ready to do so, someone else came in. So I tried to look like I was still busy, still cleaning up, going back over to the mirror, anything to distract this new visitor from what I was really about to do!

While waiting for him to leave, I noticed something hanging on the wall, next to the door. It was a small clipboard with the bathroom clean-up schedule – you know the ones that the maintenance personnel have to fill out to show that they are attending to the restrooms? And that’s when I got my nudge, my inspiration from Spirit – leave it there

I only had to wait a couple more seconds for the visitor to leave the restroom. He probably thought I was weird anyway… hanging out, spending way too much time in front of the mirror…

So… out he goes, and then I slip my dollar in between the pages on that small clipboard. I walked back out to greet my family, like nothing happened…

We drove off…

Another successful “drop” by The Secret Dollar Man!

A Little Slight Of Hand At The Bank

Almost forgot to mention… Following my post yesterday about giving away at the bank…

After finishing my prayer in the car, I walked into the bank, and over to the table top where they have all the deposit and withdrawal slips.

I needed a deposit slip.

As I was getting one out, I did my best slight-of-hand to slip my dollar into the middle of that stack of deposit slips. So one of the next depositors to walk in and grab a deposit slip… Well they’re gonna get a surprise of their own!

Blessings and Good Fortune to you in your giving this week!

Going All The Way

I went to the bank today to make a deposit, and decided that this was where I was going to Give Away A Dollar A Day. So I sat in my car before going in, and said a prayer around this give away.

My give away prayer is whatever I’m drawn to in the moment – sometimes it is for someone in my family, sometimes for a friend or maybe even a stranger in need, and sometimes it is for something that I want to be better at in my life.

Today’s prayer was the later. I prayed for creating… intending… attracting – you could use any of these words – something into my life. Something near and dear to my heart… and my soul.

But I soon discovered that I wasn’t being very trusting, because I was praying for a “miniature” version of it. So I decided to go for it. I didn’t just pray for the moon, I prayed past the moon! I went all the way, pulling out all the stops!

And then I felt it…

I felt the fear, and the doubt, and the uncertainty. Woah, that was too BIG of a prayer. I was asking for too much. And then it really struck me… What I would do with my dollar was put that fear, that doubt into my letting go of it. And when I released my dollar back to Spirit, I also released that doubt.

Now, THAT was cool!

Blessings!

Dreama’s Grandmother

Joan Adams is amazing! I’ll be browsing through my e-mails, and then I’ll find one from her with the most incredibly inspiring story in it!! Joan, I don’t know where you find all of these, but I do thank you so much for sending them my way. This most recent one that you sent is a real keeper…

After the financial letdowns of 2008, it’s good to know that the next few months will likely be a time for healing and recovery. Financial abundance, like everything in life, is not so much about what’s out there in the world, but what’s inside, creating your personal reality.

Dreama Vance, the co-founder of InfiniteBeing.com, recalls how her grandmother lived her life, even through the years of the Great Depression, with an almost magical sense of natural abundance.

Secrets of Abundance, by Dreama Vance

The light filtered softly into the room as the class took a deep breath and relaxed on yoga mats. “What is your first memory when I say the word grandmother?” the instructor asked.

Apple Butter. Immediately I could taste the tangy sweetness, smell the cinnamon, feel the velvety texture on my tongue. At the same instant I saw her, sitting in the porch swing peeling apples and I saw myself standing beside a huge kettle over an open fire, huddling in my jacket against the cool crisp air of the early autumn morning. I remember it as an Event. The day before, some of the neighbor ladies would gather on the porch and peel apples all day. Then, the next morning, the apple butter would cook all day outside over that open fire in that kettle that was bigger than I was. My mother tells me that they would get rolls of new pennies at the bank and line the kettle with them to keep the apple butter from sticking on the bottom. Afterwards, there would be jars and jars of apple butter and it was the very best in all the world.

And so was my grandmother. From the earliest time I can remember until college I would spend summers with my grandparents. So I learned a lot from them. They were simple, hardworking people, with not much education, but I learned my first principle of abundance from them.

Grandmother did not work outside of the home, but she always had money. When my sister and I wanted to go to the movies, Grandmother would pull out a twenty dollar bill and tell us to keep the change. This was when movies cost ten cents on Saturdays.

Grandmother was always finding money. It sounds funny to me now but it’s true. Her “luck” finding money is legendary in our family. Granddaddy would take her to the grocery store and Grandmother would open her car door and look down and there would be a twenty dollar bill. Or, she would be in the grocery store and lean over the meat counter and find a twenty dollar bill. Once she bought a sack of potting soil and opened it up and found three hundred dollars.

At the same time Grandmother was finding money, she was quietly giving it away. Obviously, she gave to us kids. But I also remember taking laundry up to Juanita’s house to be ironed (even though she had two perfectly capable grandchildren who could iron) because Juanita’s husband was out of work and she had six children to feed. By sending the ironing, Grandmother was able to pay her.

There are other stories of goodness, caring for the sick, meeting needs as she found them. Grandmother always had the minister come for Sunday dinner and she made sure he had new shoes when he needed them. Once Grandmother brought home a neighbor who was in a nursing home and fed and bathed and cared for her for three weeks so the lady could have a “change of scenery.”

As I look back, I literally see my Grandmother with money coming into her left hand, passing through her heart and going out her right hand. It is a constant flow. It comes in and goes out. We are, after all, a conduit for the Infinite.

The Source is within us. We do not need to seek outside of ourselves for our supply. Indeed, there is, actually, nothing outside of our consciousness. All we need to do, first, is to realize this. The realization that nothing comes to us, but instead comes from us, from the Outpouring of Spirit, is the foundation of all abundance. Secondly, we must release it. We must turn on the flow. We do this by giving. Spiritual teachings tell us to create a vacuum so the Universe can fill it up; that as you give, so shall you receive.

I love the two Bible stories of the widow who feeds Elijah, and Jesus with the loaves and fishes. In the first, Elijah asks a poor widow for a morsel of bread. The destitute widow has only a tiny bit of meal and a few drops of oil, only enough to make one last cake for her and her son before they face death from such extreme poverty. Elijah assures her that if she feeds him first, her supply will not run out. This woman, facing death, takes from her meager supply, and believing, steps out in faith, and gives. She prepares a tiny cake and feeds Elijah. From this act, the cruse (container) of oil and the meal are replenished; to the initial tiny bit, more and more is added, and she feeds Elijah and her household throughout the famine. (1 Kings 17: 11-16)

In the story of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus is out in the desert teaching and healing these hordes of people that have followed him when, as the day wanes, the disciples approach and suggest that he send the crowds away to find food and lodging. Jesus replies, “Feed them.” The disciples, however, respond that they have only five loaves and two fishes unless they go and buy food for all of the people. So Jesus takes the five loaves and two fishes, blesses them, and gives them to the disciples to set before the multitudes. Everyone eats until they are full. At the end of the meal, there are twelve basketsful left over. (Luke 9: 11-17)

The two stories, so rich in symbolism, illustrate the same principles I learned from my grandparents. Open your heart and let the ‘All That Is’ pour out from you into manifestation. For many of us, when we first begin our spiritual journey, we will give like the widow, stepping out in faith that our supply will be met. But as we mature in our spiritual growth and understanding we will act from a place of knowledge, knowing

the Infinite within, and blessing and releasing as Jesus did. Daily, in your meditation time, look into your house and see what you have to give. Begin to pour from your cruse of oil and break your loaves of bread. And like my grandmother, do it quietly, in silence.

Thank you, Joan, for your many gifts, the best one being you!

Todd

True Giving

My wife, Victoria, needed to go get her driver’s license renewed, and asked me to write down the directions for her on how to get there. I had done this many times before, because she admittedly is not good with directions.

But the sad part is that, for years, I grumbled about it and became really irritated every time she asked me to do this. That critical voice inside my head would whine, “why the hell can’t she figure this out on her own… why do I always have to do this for her… why can’t she learn to read a map… why doesn’t she take the time to learn map reading and her north from her south…” Really critical inner voice kinda stuff here.

And then it hit me…

I have been given the gifts of math, and physics, and science, and understanding the workings in our physical world. I’m not being arrogant when I say this, it’s simply the way I think. And regardless of whether I had the degree or not, I think like an engineer.

These are some of my gifts… And Victoria doesn’t have any of these.

But what she does have is a very solid and real understanding of the soul, of the stuff you can’t see, and that you can’t explain with a math equation. Her gift is her grasp of the inner workings of and the map of the soul. I love that part about her. I cherish it. I am now more grateful than ever for being able to connect with that in her because she helps me to connect with that in me.

So I am truly thankful for this new awareness that one of my gifts for her is to be able to draw a map, to help her get along in the physical world if and when she gets stuck. And her gift to me – which I want to openly and lovingly receive – is to continue to guide me in my journey through the soul.

And, you know, that’s the best kind of gift there is!

Blessings,

Todd

PS – By the way, Victoria still doesn’t know her north from her south. I’m not even sure she knows her left from her right. And she may never. But that’s OK, because I sometimes need some guidance, from her, in understanding and re-learning the directions to my heart.

Prosperity’s Source

You know, I do my very best to stay positive and upbeat, and am committed to my inner work everyday. And one of the new things I’ve added to my life is to begin to eliminate the “news” from each day. I’m talking about the news on TV and in print.

But I have to admit, I still feel overwhelmed sometimes with all that’s going on. If I don’t hear it on TV anymore or read it in the paper, somebody’s talking about “it” at work. And “it” is how bad it is out there right now.

So…

I found myself pulling into the parking lot of the Barnes and Noble bookstore, because I wanted to look for a particular book and a magazine. I turned off the car, had my dollar in my hand, and paused for a moment.

I was feeling that overwhelm again, after hearing more people talking about “it” at the office. So I prayed about it in my car. I talked to God, while I held onto that dollar that I would soon be giving away in the store. And then a thought came to me like a bright beam of light – I thought back on how I had been in a financially devastating situation just two years earlier, and truthfully did not know how I was going to pull my family out of the rut I had gotten us into. At that time, the rest of the world was in great shape. But we weren’t. And that’s all that mattered at the time. That’s all I could focus on.

You probably know the rest of the story – that, in the midst of that really challenging situation, I was inspired to begin to Give Away A Dollar A Day. All at a time when there was a part of me that wasn’t sure if there was any hope left. But I did it anyway. I listened to that still small voice of inspiration inside. I trusted.

I reflected back on all of this while sitting in my car holding onto that dollar… And I realized that there is very likely a really big group of people right now – possibly all 6 billion of us – who feel the same way that I felt back then when I didn’t know where to turn to or what to do next. And then it became even clearer to me. Back then, I listened, and I trusted. And as a result, we were more than just a little provided for. In the coming months, it would unfold that we were being very well provided for. I would come to know that God was our Source. Not the economy. Not the business environment. Not who I know or what I know.

And you know what? I don’t think that NOW is any different. God is still my Source, and God is still OUR Source. For all of us! So as I held that dollar in my hand, I said “Thank you, God, for being my Source”! That’s when I opened my door, got out of my car, and headed into the store…

I didn’t find either the book or the magazine I was looking for, but while searching, I decided to slip my dollar inside the cover of one of the guitar magazines. (Hey, I’m a guitar player, so I wanted another picker who bought that magazine later on to enjoy this gift!) I made sure that about an inch of it was poking out the top so that anyone could see it while browsing through the magazine section. Well… wouldn’t you know it, one of the employees in the store came over later on to help me find what I was searching for, and he ends up finding the bill! I heard him mumble, and then say, “Woah, I thought this was a fake”, and then picked it up and put it in his pocket. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t look at him. I kept on browsing. The Secret Dollar Man never reveals his identity! :)

I felt so good after that, that I left ANOTHER dollar while in the grocery store right next to our house, where I made another stop on the way home.

But here’s what really blew me away today…

I headed back home, and turned off into our neighborhood. There was a woman jogger on the street. As I got ready to turn down our side street, I spotted something in the road that looked like a bill. So I stopped the car – right there in the middle of the intersection! – and got out to retrieve it. The jogger was right next to my car by this time and picked up the bill first. She turned to me and said, “Is this yours?” I looked at it. It was a $10 bill! Just lying there in the street!! How often does THAT happen?!?… I told her, “Hey, you picked it up first, it’s yours”. She had kind of a half-puzzled, half-excited look on her face, and continued on her jog, holding that new $10 bill in her hand. Yes, I was tempted to claim it for my own, because I knew that I had spotted it first. But in the spirit of giving, I wanted HER to have it! The whole string of events around giving and God as my Source were all coming together in this moment, and it felt like I was giving her this gift!

Remember that this adventurous trip all started with me hooking into the “news” once again, and what others are saying right now and are worried about. But with all of the wonderful things that happened around Give Away A Dollar A Day today, I have NO DOUBT whatsoever that God IS my Source.

In gratitude, and blessings,

Todd

An Amazing Gift From Give Away A Dollar A Day

Give Away A Dollar A Day is a wonderful practice for anyone to bring into their life. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s all about unconditional giving.

And, it’s grown into a world wide movement, where some very blessed things are happening.

A friend wrote to me a few weeks ago saying how she was having some serious financial trouble, about to lose her condo, and so she stopped giving away every day. So I started saying a prayer for her each time I gave away. And then another friend wrote to me who had been through a similar situation and had pulled herself up and out of it after doing much research on how to go about it. I passed this story on to the first friend, linked the two together, and now the second one is coaching the first one on how to recover and to get back on track! Wow!!

There’s much power in a movement like Give Away A Dollar A Day!

Thank you to both of you. May prosperity return abundantly to your lives!

Remember, Giving Is Good Karma,

Todd
