This has been a real fun one!!!
On Monday, October the 22nd, I left a dollar bill out in the open at the office where I work. There are around 100 people in our office, so I knew someone was bound to find it and soon. I put it under an open bottle of water that had been there for about a week on top of a small file cabinet. The reason I chose this place was because someone had put a convincing copy of a dollar bill under this same bottle a few days earlier. I overheard a couple of office mates tricking and teasing each other about the fake bill, so I thought this would be a great place to put the real one!
October the 24th (Day 3): To my surprise, this bill is still lying there unmoved and unclaimed! I took a picture of it today and will check it again over the next few days.
Now, this next part was pretty wild… Yesterday, after it had been there for a little over a day, a couple of sales people walked passed it and made some comments. Obviously remembering the fake one, I heard one of them say to the others, “I’m not even gonna touch that one!” He sounded as if he believed he was being tricked or roped into something all over again!
October the 26th (Day 5): Yep… It’s still there!
I talked to another one of my coworkers about it. He commented that the fake copy was there last week and that this one was real. (I grinned – what little he knew about what I knew!). And then I suggested to him that he claim it as his own, seeing as how no one had picked it up yet. His response was interesting: “I don’t need a dollar! I need $50,000!!” So I looked back and said, “Well then, take that one and then you’ll only need $49,999!” He didn’t go for it. I’ll check again tomorrow…
October the 29th (Day 8): Hmm… It’s still there. Unclaimed. Resting contentedly under that same ol’ bottle of water…
I’m amazed… And a bit shocked…
OK, so I got a little restless today, perturbed that no one has fetched it yet. So I removed the bottle of water, hoping that all passers-by would notice the difference and that THIS subtle change would be enough to prompt someone to take the bill!
Did it make any difference? Nope. Nada. I told my wife about this. She was blown away, too, but she said she wouldn’t have removed the bottle of water. OK, so maybe she’s right. (I don’t think I’ve ever said this to her, but she is a great “leveler’. She usually gets me to see things with such clarity, and this time was no different.) So when I got back to the office, I returned the bottle of water. Patience, Todd. Have patience!
October the 31st (Day 10): OMG… Still there! I got really bored with taking the same pictures over and over again, so no photos this time… Sorry.
November the 1st (Day 11): I could almost hear BB King singing, “The thrill is gone…” Because today I felt like singing, “The bill is gone…”
Back in the office today, I noticed that the bottle of water was still there, but the dollar bill was gone!!! Someone had finally CLAIMED it! Eleven days…
