One of my personal “guidelines” in Give Away A Dollar A Day is that I do it in such a way that no one sees me doing it. This way, it becomes an exciting surprise to whoever finds it!
So today, we were at the Houston Museum, just leaving a magnificent show at the IMAX Theatre. My family and I were immersed in the exiting crowd of people, shoulder to shoulder. “This is going to be tricky”, I thought. So I proceeded to drop my dollar bill on the ground, having it “accidentally” slip and fall out of my front pants pocket. Almost immediately, a lady about two rows of people behind us picked up the bill. I could see her out of the corner of my eye trying to hurry past the person in front of her so that she could return it to me. She was a good soul. She was doing her best.
But my purpose in Give Away A Dollar A Day is not to receive back what I had just given away. I want to prosper someone else! If and when it comes back in a completely unsuspecting manner, a thousand fold or so - now that’s a different story. But in this situation, I didn’t want it back. I wanted her to have it. So I scooted forward just enough to out-pace her, pretending I didn’t notice her Good Samaritan attempts.
Was there something deeper I was to learn from this? Was my intention to release it not deep enough that day because it was too easily making its way back to me? Or was she someone who was not allowing herself to receive an unexpected surprise from the Universe? I talked to my wife about this, and she told me about the many times she had found money in a public place and tried to return it, if not directly to a person, but to a cashier or a store manager.
Whatever the case may be, this was yet another episode in the exciting and never repeating adventures of Give Away A Dollar A Day!
Blessings, and joyous giving to you and yours,
Todd
