Victoria is starting to Give Away A Dollar A Day!!!
She just told me a story about a homeless person she was giving a dollar to each time she took our daughter downtown for play rehearsal. This sweet little old man with no teeth was standing on the street corner each time she drove by, obviously longing for handouts.
But today, there was another person on the corner. Although he was carrying a sign begging for spare change, he was wearing much nicer clothing - this man was not only well dressed, but well groomed, and was even sporting a brand new pair of shoes!
Well… my wife decided not to give THIS guy a dollar. And so away she went…
But a little while later, she realized she had gone into judgment about this person. Who was she to judge this guy by his clothes, his outer appearance? She went on to consider the possibility that he may have even been “successful” at one time in his life, had enough money to buy this nice outfit, and was proud to wear it in his new venture. She also admitted that she was now trying to control the marvelous gift of giving away by “deciding” who was worthy of receiving and who was not.
Trying to control… Woah!
I’ve been there, too. It’s a powerful realization! This is why one of my “guidelines” is to not give a dollar directly to any person, but rather to leave it in a public spot, where someone will be surprised to find it on their own.
